Magnesium hydroxide is the leading halogen-free flame retardant (HFFR) for polyolefins and elastomers. It absorbs heat endothermically and releases water vapor at 330–430 °C — suppressing flame, diluting combustible gases and cooling the polymer — while leaving no corrosive or toxic smoke. That makes Mg(OH)₂ the default choice for LSZH cable sheathing, building materials and e-mobility interiors where halogenated FRs are restricted.

Which Grade to Use
| Grade | Typical loading | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| High Purity Mg(OH)₂ (≥99%) | 50–65 phr | LSZH cable compounds, PP/PE profiles — highest whiteness & thermal stability |
| Surface-Modified Mg(OH)₂ | 55–70 phr | High-loading EVA/TPO systems — better dispersion, higher elongation at break |
| Custom particle-size grades | tailored | Thin-wall extrusion and co-extrusion lines needing specific D50 |
how it performs
Mechanism & Processing Notes
- Endothermic cooling: absorbs ≈1.3 kJ/g from the burning polymer, lowering the decomposition rate of the matrix.
- Char & oxide layer: the MgO residue forms a protective barrier that reduces heat transfer and drips.
- Low smoke, zero halogen: passes IEC 60754, EN 45545 and UL 94 V-0 at practical loadings when paired with synergists.
- Processing: use the modified grade for fill factors above 55 phr — silane/titanate treatment protects polymer viscosity and mechanical elongation.
