Mg-based flue gas desulfurization is the most efficient wet scrubbing route for medium-to-high sulfur fuels. Magnesium oxide reacts with SO₂ to form magnesium sulfite/sulfate, achieving 98%+ removal at liquid-gas ratios far below limestone systems — smaller absorber towers, lower circulation pumping power and no scaling or plugging.
recommended grades
Which Grade to Use
| Grade | Key spec | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Active MgO | activity value & fast dissolution | Wet Mg-FGD absorber slurry — maximum reactivity, minimal reagent consumption |
| Industrial Grade MgO (85–90%) | cost-optimized bulk supply | Coking, sintering and steel-plant flue trains with moderate SO₂ loads |
| Heavy MgO | high bulk density | Long-haul shipping where freight cost per ton of MgO matters |
how it performs
Process Advantages
- Higher removal efficiency: MgSO₃ chemistry is fast and highly soluble — ≥98% SO₂ removal even at high sulfur coal.
- Compact plant: liquid-gas ratio ~30–50% of a limestone process; towers are smaller and cheaper.
- No scaling: soluble reaction products keep heat exchangers and mist eliminators clean.
- By-product value: oxidation of the liquor yields MgSO₄ fertilizer-grade salt; the loop can be regenerated for reagent savings.
- Trio of pollutants: same reagent path captures SO₃ and HCl efficiently.
